Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States, signed this approximate 3x7.75 Fletcher & Sharpe’s Bank check dated, “December 29th, 1879,” in the amount of, “$7.90.” Harrison, a Republican, started his career in politics first as an attorney and church leader, and later became a U.S. Senator. During his presidency he supported pensions for veterans and he made great strides in modernizing the U.S. Navy. Harrison has been honored on six U.S. Postage stamps and in 1942, a Liberty Ship, a class of cargo ship built during WWII, the SS Benjamin Harrison, was named in his honor.
