The Society of American Baseball Researchers, better known as SABR, honored Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese with their "Hero of Baseball Award" in 1997. This highly coveted honor is bestowed on a player who not only exemplifies excellence on the field but also brings honor onto the game itself through their actions off the field. Pee Wee Reese was just such a man. The award features an engraved plaque inset onto a 9 1/2" x 12" wooden base. The plaque lists Reese's many professional and personal accomplishments: "Awarded to Pee Wee Reese Hall of Fame Shortstop World War II Navy Veteran Captain of Great Brooklyn Dodgers Teams Popular Television Broadcaster" but most importantly the award is inscribed with the contribution to the game that made Reese a real hero: "His Decency and Courage Helped Ease Baseball's Integration". The award capped off with "A Captain Among Men June 21, 1997". The wooden base has some dings and scuffs from storage. Comes with LOA from the Pee Wee Reese Family.
