This deed represents the property located between 37 and 38th Streets and 11th and 12th Avenue in Manhattan. Back in 1866 when this document was drawn up, the land was divided into 64 lots but today those parcels have been combined and better known as the Javits Center. Besides the historical significance of this deed, it is aesthetically pleasing with its archaic typography and wonderful flowing calligraphy. The two-sided deed measures 17" x 22" overall and has been folded into 1/12th's to make a much more compact and file-able document. As a working legal document it has been well-read throughout the decades. There is some separation at the folds which have been repaired with clear adhesive tape, and overall the document exhibits the expected toning from the past 150 years. The outside of the deed records the two parties making the land transaction as well as the "referee" between the two. The inside has a small plain view of the area in question, surveying notes, 10 probates, will tax stamps (four $10 and six $5), as well as notary stamps and New York State seals. A very impressive document that would make an attractive display.
