The famed Bronx Bombers of 1938 cruised to a four-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs in the World Series behind the likes of Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. Those Yankees legends, along with 30 other members of that ’38 squad, have signed this “Goldsmith Official League” baseball in blue fountain pen, likely from the team’s time at spring training that year. Among the Yankees Hall of Famers who signed the baseball are Gehrig, DiMaggio, Earle Combs, Bill Dickey, Red Ruffing and Joe Gordon. Other notable ’38 Yankees who signed the baseball include Red Rolfe and George Selkirk. The ball does feature five clubhouse signatures, according to JSA examination, and they include manager Joe McCarthy, Lefty Gomez, Myril Hoag, Monte Pearson and Jake Powell. The signatures of then Yankees prospects Buddy Rosar and Jack Fallon, as well as Dodgers outfielder Ernie Koy, lend to the notion that this baseball was likely signed during spring training, possibly from an exhibition game against Brooklyn. The red and black laced “A37” model baseball still shows a nice white color, adding to the attractiveness of the signatures. DiMaggio’s signature does show signs of bleeding, while Gehrig’s signature appears partially behind the Goldsmith manufacturer stamping. The 1938 World Series Champion Yankees team-signed baseball comes with a JSA LOA.
