Bender is known for his record tying accomplishment of pitching three complete games in a single World Series. Bender was a well liked player who earned his nickname due to his Native American descent, and he was often subjected to discrimination because of it, though he often turned the other cheek and did not let it affect his performance on the field. Ty Cobb once said of Bender that he was, “the most intelligent pitcher he ever faced.” Bender is a member of Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame and he also worked as a major league coach and as a baseball scout.
