Presented here is a pin from the New York Yankees 1939 World Series run. The 1939 Yanks were without the services of star first baseman Lou Gehrig, who played in only eight games before a degenerative neuromuscular condition forced his untimely retirement. Perhaps buoyed on by the emotions swirling around their hamstrung captain, the Yanks won 106 games as young centerfielder Joe DiMaggio clubbed 30 home runs and 126 RBI while hitting an outstanding .381.
The Yankees won the American League by a whopping 17 games over their bitter rivals from Boston to set up a Fall Classic against the Cincinnati Reds. The Yankees continued their dominance in October, finishing off the Reds in a four game series as American League MVP Joe DiMaggio and Charlie Keller paced the offense.
The item presented here is a baseball pin bearing the text “A.L. Champions N.Y. Yankees” and “World Series”. The pin is 1 ¾ inches in diameter, and has two three inch ribbons, one blue and one gold, descending from the pin. Additionally, a two inch, plastic Yankee figurine is dangling from the pin. This pin is in tremendous shape and is a unique keepsake from a bygone era of the sport.
