Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States, has signed this brief, typed letter. Hoover was president from 1929 to 1933, presiding over an extremely difficult time in the United States marred by the Great Depression only eight months after Hoover took office. Hoover was defeated by Franklin Roosevelt in his bid for re-election in the election of 1932.
In this letter, Hoover writes to his longtime aide and confidant Lawrence Richey, asking him to “have Miss McGrath look over the protests which I received asking me to veto the tariff bill and pick out any that indicates New York banking or such influences.” This letter was typed on January 19th, 1935, after Hoover’s presidency and when Richey was in charge of compiling and describing Hoover’s commerce and presidency papers. Hoover signed the bottom of this letter in black pen. This item comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (W03640).
