JULY 19TH AUCTION
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/8/2014
Clark Griffith was a former major league pitcher and manager who eventually became owner of the Washington Senators in 1920. Calvin Griffith was Clark’s nephew who took over as club owner from his uncle in 1955, maintaining that role until 1984. Calvin was the one who moved the franchise to Minnesota in 1961 where they became the Twins. This official MLB Harridge baseball is signed in ink by both men, with "Calvin Griffith" ("6") across the sweet spot, and "Calvin Griffith" ("8") on the south panel. The north panel has "Washington 7 Boston 1 7/5/54" written in an unknown hand. This likely game used baseball from that day is yellowed and scraped in some areas, not materially affecting either signature, while the stampings are extremely faded.
