The composed center back Jose Nasazzi commanded the Uruguay defense during their triumph at the 1930 FIFA World Cup in Montevideo. Nasazzi, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was retroactively named the Best Player of the Tournament by FIFA after Uruguay rolled through the tournament. The Bella Vista and Nacional player led Uruguay to four South American championships during his tenure with La Celeste, and alongside Obdulio Varela is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Uruguay’s history.
Offered in this lot is the 1930 FIFA World Cup medal presented to Jose Nasazzi by the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF). Etched in high-relief on the front of the medal is an image of the Jules Rimet Trophy, while the reverse side of this medal is etched with “A. U. de F. -A- Jose Nasazzi Capitan” and “Campeon Mundial”. This tremendous medal was awarded to the very first winning captain in World Cup history! This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
