Uruguay’s captain and commanding center back Jose Nasazzi was presented with this large gilt medal by the Asociacion Uruguaya de Futbol (AUF) after leading La Celeste to a historic victory in the 1930 FIFA World Cup. FIFA selected Uruguay to host the inaugural tournament after their unprecedented successes in the 1924 and 1928 Olympics in Europe, with the brand-new Estadio Centenario in Montevideo hosting the majority of the World Cup clashes. Nasazzi, retroactively named the Golden Ball winner of the 1930 World Cup by FIFA, was instrumental in carrying Uruguay to a 4-2 win over neighbors Argentina in a tense final.
This offered medal measures 2 ½ inches in diameter, with a heavenly scene etched in high relief on the medal’s face. Also etched on the face is the text “Primer Centenario Del Uruguay” and “MCMXXX”. Etched on the back of the medal is “1er Campeonato Mundial De Football”, “Jose Nasazzi Capitan”, and “Montevideo 1930”. This medal was presented to Nasazzi by the President of the AUF after Uruguay’s iconic victory in the 1930 FIFA World Cup. It remains in excellent condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
