One of the rarest pre-WWI candy issues ever distributed are the 1912 Plow’s Candy cards. In fact, these sepia-toned 3” x 4” cards are so rare they were never even included in the original American Card Catalog and were never known until the 1960s! For a variety of reasons, these cards are extremely popular with collectors. First, is the extreme rarity. There are about 70 knows subjects in the “set” and at the time of this writing, only 122 cards have been graded by either PSA or SGC! Second, many of the images within the set have never been seen before. It is like the Plow’s Candy Marketing Director said to his photographer, “Hey Bill, I got an idea for a promotion. When each team comes into town, go ahead to the field and take a couple snapshots of the visiting players.” These images are all in game action or posed shots taken before games, with the immense creations of those early stadiums (and a few players) in clear view. Third, the large dimensions for a card from that era is amazing to behold. Presented here is an incredible SGC graded card of Josh Devore, which has only two graded examples (the other being a PSA 2 with a qualifier), with his offering the highest graded one in existence! Devore was a left-hand hitting outfielder who played for four teams, mostly with the New York Giants. Here, Devore is posed reaching for a ball, all set against a classic vintage baseball stadium backdrop. This card exhibits four square corners, with a light touch on the lower left, is very well centered and has a crisp, almost three-dimensional image. You can almost smell the grass which Devore is standing. The print registration exhibits superb contrast, and there are no surface issues evident on either side. With too few graded cards of this issue ever encapsulated, this represents a near once in a lifetime opportunity to obtain one of the hobby’s most rare baseball cards. SGC Graded 50 VG-EX 4.
