2019 Summer Premium Live and Catalog Auction Lots 1-82 Close Aug 1- 83-end close 8/10
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 8/11/2019
Offered in this lot is a collection of 10 photographs originating from the estate of former Uruguay goalkeeper Andres Mazali. These photographs mostly date to the European tour of Uruguayan outfit Club Nacional in 1925 after the Uruguayan national team dominated their competition at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Nacional played 38 games from March to August of 1925, finishing with a record of 26 wins, seven draws, and five losses against historic European clubs such as Barcelona, Genoa, Sporting Lisbon, and Rapid Wien. Thanks in no small part to Mazali’s heroics in net, Nacional outscored their opponents 130 to 30 during their romp across the continent.
These photographs include three postcards showing Nacional performing calisthenics on their boat ride to Europe, while another two photographs show Mazali on the journey. These five postcards all have Spanish writing on the reverse side in black pen that dates the images to February of 1925. Three photographs show Mazali manning the Nacional goal. The penultimate photograph shows numerous Uruguayans enjoying a drink together, surrounding one of their compatriots in an oversized hat. The final photograph shows Mazali lounging on a soccer pitch with seven other players. Written on the back of this photograph is “Centros y defensor 1933”. These items come with a LOA confirming they are part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
