Charlie Chaplin rose to fame in the early 1920s while featuring in silent films. Offered in this lot are two signed items from Chaplin, one of the most recognizable figures of his day. The first item signed by Chaplin is an 8 ½ x 11-inch typed letter. This letter has the “CHARLIE CHAPLIN MUSIC PUBLISHING CO.” stamp on the top which also lists the locations (New York, Chicago, London, Paris, Johannesburg & Syndey), along with address “BLANCHARD HALL 233 SOUTH BROADWAY OPPOSITE CITY HALL Los Angeles, U.S.A.” A drawing of the Los Angeles building is on the upper left, while a portrait of Charlie Chaplin is on the upper right. The names “CHARLES CHAPLIN”, “SYNDEY CHAPLIN” and “HERBERT CLARK” are printed on the top. This letter was dated “June 6, 1916.” and was addressed to “Mr. George B. Sloane, 386 Fifth Ave., New York City.” and reads “Dear Mr. Sloane: Am enclosing herewith, auto-graphed card, as per your request of Apr. 26. Thanking you for your keen in-terest in my screen work, I am, Very truly yours,”. Chaplin signed his name in bold black steel-tip fountain pen. The letter is in good condition, with vertical and horizontal creases, consistent with being placed in an envelope. This signed document comes with a LOA from JSA (BB12754).
The next item in this lot is the signed photograph that Chaplin enclosed with the above-described signed letter. This portrait of Chaplin is a sepia-toned photograph that measures 5 x 7 inches. This photograph is the image that was used on the upper right corner of the signed letter. The photograph is on an approximate 6 ¾ x 9 ¼ -inch thick paper backing. Chaplin has signed his name in steel-tip black fountain pen and inscribed “Sincerely”. “Charles Chaplin” has been handwritten in pencil below the image on the thick paper backing. This photo is in overall good condition with minimal edge and corner wear. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (BB12755) for the signature.
