On September 21, 2003 Greg Maddux took the mound with a chance to break a record set by the great Cy Young. With any changes in the limitations of pitchers in the modern baseball era, few ever thought Cy Young's records would fall. With the mastery of the craft and year in and year out consistency, Maddux stood 90 feet away from immortality on this day. In his second to last chance of the season Maddux was brilliant giving up one hit in five innings pitched. The Braves would go on to defeat the Marlins and Maddux was awarded his 15th win of the season for a record 16th season.

This lot offers a baseball that was used in the game in which Maddux broke Young's record. The baseball has been signed on the sweet spot and Maddux added the inscription 16 x 15 additionally. The Baseball has been authenticated by Major League Baseball with the affixed hologram MR221706. The lot also includes a ticket from the game that has also been signed by Maddux. In addition to these two historic memento's the lot also includes a ticket from Maddux's long time teammate John Smoltz on the day he achieved his 200th carer win. The ticket has been signed by Smoltz and all three signatures in the lot have been authenticated by Beckett.
