Noted American artist LeRoy Neiman was famous for his for his brilliantly colored, expressionist paintings and screen prints of athletes, musicians, and sporting events. Beginning in 1960, he traveled the world observing and painting leisure life, social activities and athletic competitions including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Kentucky Derby, championship boxing, PGA and The Masters golf tournament, The Ryder Cup, the World Equestrian Games, Wimbledon and other Grand Slam competitions, as well as night life, entertainment, jazz and the world of casino gambling.

Presented is a lot of 40 horse racing serigraphs, lithographs and other printed paper items signed by the late artist, some with multiple copies. The first item in this lot is a Neiman signature in gold marker in the lower right corner of an 11½ x 16-inch white poster for a November 27 to December 11, 1962 gallery showing of Neiman’s paintings in Paris, with one of his horse racing paintings featured in the center. The second item in this lot is a Neiman signature in black marker on the front of a 1977 Monmouth Park (NJ) Jockey Club 8¾ x 11½ -inch paper portfolio, with a reproduction of Neiman’s 1970 painting celebrating the centennial of Monmouth Park on the front, and three Neiman painted horse racing vignettes on the back cover. Accompanying this item is a 4 x 9-inch paper Monmouth Park racing form for July 18, 1977 with a reproduction of Neiman’s 1970 Monmouth Park Centennial painting on the front cover. The third item in this lot is a Neiman signature and inscription in red pen on the front cover of the 1979 Harry N. Abrams book, “LeRoy Neiman Horses.” The artist has signed his name below the title and inscribed “’85” below his signature, which is to the left of a reproduction of a 1979 Neiman painting of a horse and English-style rider. The back cover of the 14 x 40-inch book jacket has a Neiman painting of a horse. The fourth item in this lot are Neiman signatures on three (3) copies of a 24 x 24-inch color poster for the “2010 Governor’s Kentucky Derby Celebration”. Neiman has signed his name on each poster in black pen in the lower right corner below a reproduction of his 1979 painting of the 1978 Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winning horse Affirmed. 

The fifth item in this lot are LeRoy Neiman signatures on three (3) copies of a 22 x 34-inch color poster for “LeRoy Neiman A Racing Retrospective 1962 – 1994 The Kentucky Derby Museum April 10 – June 3, 1995.” Neiman has signed his name on each in black pen in the lower right corner below a reproduction of his 1994 painting of horses and jockeys coming down the stretch at the Kentucky Derby. The sixth item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature in gray graphite pencil in the lower right corner of a 30 x 36-inch, unframed giclee print on canvas of Neiman’s painting, “Queen at Ascot.” The 1976 Neiman painting is also known as “The Pink Queen,” and depicts England’s Queen Elizabeth II at the annual Ascot races. The seventh item in this lot are LeRoy Neiman signatures on two (2) copies of a 24 x 36-inch poster from the Neiman gallery, copyright 2001, with reproductions of eight Neiman paintings of horse racing jockeys. Neiman has signed each copy in black marker in the lower right corner. The eighth item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature, in black pen, in the lower right corner of a 22½ x 26-inch poster print collage of eight Neiman portrait paintings of horse racing jockeys.

The ninth item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature in gray graphite pencil in the lower right corner of a 23 x 29-inch limited edition print of the artist’s 1970 portrait of jockey Bill Hartrack. The inscription “66/200” is in gray graphite pencil in the lower left corner of the print. The 10th item in this lot are LeRoy Neiman signatures in black marker in the lower right corner of six (6) copies of a 24½ x 37-inch advertising poster for his 1979 book “LeRoy Neiman Horses”. The poster features his 1979 painting of a horse with English rider that appeared on the front cover of the Harry N. Abrams art book. The poster bears the legend “LeRoy Neiman Horses” at the top, and “Hammer Graphics” across the bottom. The 11th item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature in black marker in the lower right corner of a 22½ x 29-inch color poster print of the artist’s 1967 painting “Fox Hunt.” The 12th item in this lot is two (2) copies of a 1998 Churchill Downs Breeders’ Cup Championship poster featuring a LeRoi Neiman painting of a race at Churchill Downs in Lexington, Kentucky.  The artist has signed his name in black marker at the lower right corner of both 18 x 30-inch posters below the reproduction of his painting.

The 13th item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature in black marker in the lower right corner of an 18½ x 24-inch serigraph print of his 1974 painting, “World Record – Nevele Pride.” The painting is reproduced at the center of the poster with the headline “LeRoy Neiman Saratoga Harness Commemorative” at the top margin. The 14th item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature in black marker in the lower right corner of each of two (2) copies of a 20 x 28-inch advertising poster print of his 1989 painting of a horse and jockey in the winner’s circle. The poster bears the headline “LeRoy Neiman” at the top, and the headline “Winning Color the Sharp Full Color Copier” at the bottom. The 15th item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature in black marker in the lower right corner of two (2) copies of a 13 x 19-inch two-sided promotional poster for the Cadillac Hambletonian, August 5, 1995 at the Meadowlands Racetrack. The poster features a reproduction of a 1995 Neiman painting of harness racing. The back of the poster has a list of all the Hambletonian winners 1926-1994. The 16th item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature in black marker in the lower right corner of each of two (2) copies of a 24 x 33-inch promotional poster for the 123rd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs May 3, 1997. The poster features a color reproduction of a 1997 Neiman painting, “Derby Day Paddock.”

The 17th item in this lot is Neiman’s signature in black marker in the lower right corner of an 18 x 25½-inch poster reproduction of his 1965 painting, “Rendez-vous de Chasse.” The 18th item in this lot is Neiman’s signature in gray graphite pencil in the lower right corner of a 22 x 28-inch serigraph print of his 1972 painting, “Show Jumper.” The 19th item in this lot is a pair of LeRoy Neiman signed poster prints for the Hotel del Coronado, in Coronado, California. Neiman has signed one of the 24½ x 31½ prints in the lower right corner in black marker, and the other in silver marker, below a reproduction of his 1976 painting of the landmark hotel with horses running on the beach. The 20th item in this lot are three LeRoy Neiman signed poster prints of a 1979 Neiman painting of a female jockey. The artist has signed each of the three (3) 20 x 28-inch posters in the lower right corner below the reproduction of his painting in black marker. The poster advertises Hammer Graphics in New York City.

The 21st item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature in black marker in the lower right corner of a 24 x 30-inch promotional poster for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, held September 25 to October 10, 2010 at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. The poster features a reproduction of a 2008 Neiman painting with vignettes of past competitors. The 22nd item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature and inscription on a 22 x 23-inch promotional poster for “Iroquois 1993.” Neiman has inscribed “To Lou “Another Winner” LeRoy Neiman ‘93” in gray graphite pencil below a reproduction of a 1993 painting by the artist of a jockey riding a horse to victory. The 23rd item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature and inscription on a 22 x 23-inch promotional poster for “Iroquois 1993.” Neiman has inscribed “LeRoy Neiman ‘93” in gray graphite pencil below a reproduction of a 1993 painting by the artist of a jockey riding a horse to victory. The 24th item in this lot is a LeRoy Neiman signature and inscription on a 22 x 23-inch promotional poster for “Iroquois 1993.” Neiman has inscribed “LeRoy Neiman ‘93” in black marker below a reproduction of a 1993 painting by the artist of a jockey riding a horse to victory.
