Uruguay’s legendary captain, Obdulio Varela, was presented with this Marajoaran style inkwell and deskset in honor of his exploits leading the Uruguayan national soccer team. An imposing holding midfielder, Varela was the ideal captain for Uruguay, almost single-handedly engineering the Uruguayan comeback in the 1950 FIFA World Cup Final against Brazil at the Maracana Stadium. Varela played the majority of his domestic career for Penarol in Montevideo, winning six Uruguayan Primera Division title with los Carboneros among a plethora of other silverware.
This deskset is large and comes in two pieces -- a green metal top and a detachable bottom piece. The deskset is designed in the style of the Marajoaran Brazilians, a community of indigenous people with a unique and highly sought-after style of geometric artwork. Two removable inkwells are located on the deskset. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
