Along with Vin Scully, Harry Caray, and Jack Buck, Mel Allen sits atop the Mount Rushmore of baseball announcers. The voice of the Yankees for the better part of the mid-20th century, Allen called 22 World Series during his illustrious broadcasting career. Allen, along with fellow Yankee broadcaster Red Barber, was awarded the first ever Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting.

This item is a collection of 39 notecards that Mel Allen used to introduce players during Babe Ruth’s jersey retirement ceremony. This event, originally meant as the Silver Anniversary celebration for Yankee Stadium, took place on June 13th, 1948, a mere two months before the death of “The Great Bambino.” This would be the Babe’s final public appearance at Yankee Stadium.

The notecards are used to introduce a myriad of Hall of Famers, including Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio, Lefty Gomez, and Babe Ruth himself. The cards are mounted on three sheets of black paper measuring 23 x 19 inches each. One can almost hear the legendary broadcasters voice when reading the immortal words typed on the note cards. “How about that?” Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
