While Neil Armstrong might be the man most associated with America’s space program, none of his accomplishments would be possible without the work of the Mercury Seven, the original astronauts. John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Deke Slayton, Alan Shepard, Scott Carpenter, and Gordon Cooper risked life and limb to prove space travel possible in the late 1950s. The main goal of the Mercury program was to see if man could withstand the inhospitable reaches of space, while also drumming up public support for a manned mission to the moon.
Six of the seven Mercury astronauts signed this lithograph. Gus Grissom tragically passed away in the Apollo 1 accident, so his wife, Betty, signed the lithograph in his place. From left to right, the signatures are Shepard, Mrs. Grissom, Glenn, Slayton, Carpenter, Schirra, and Gordon. All signatures are written in gray pencil. The artist, George Bishop, also signed in grey pencil. This lithograph measures 40 ½ x 30 ½ inches. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (Y98748).
