The 2000 Nokia Sugar Bowl was a matchup of two undefeated teams – the Florida State Seminoles of the ACC and the Virginia Tech Hokies of the Big East. The 1999 Virginia Tech Hokies finished the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record, winning the Big East with a 7-0 conference mark. The Hokies finished first in the nation in points, scoring a whopping 40.3 per game. Much of that success can be attributed to quarterback Michael Vick. With a QB rating of 171.1, Vick threw for 2,065 yards and 13 touchdowns against just five interceptions. He also did it on the ground, rushing for 682 yards (a 5.2 average per rush) and nine TDs. Florida State jumped out to a 28-14 halftime lead, only to see Michael Vick and the Hokies storm back with a 15-point 3rd quarter to take the slimmest of margins into the final quarter of play. However, Peter Warrick and the Seminoles were too much to handle in the fourth quarter as Florida State erupted with 18 points to win the game 46-29 and earn the BCS National Championship. For Virginia Tech’s Michael Vick, it would be a springboard to the NFL as his 15-29 passes for 225 yards, along with his game-high 97 yards rushing opened a lot of eyes.
