Mickey Mantle was no mere rookie when he joined the Yankees in 1951. Before he even stepped foot in Yankee Stadium he was heralded as Joe DiMaggio's successor and the most eagerly anticipated rookie in generations. After a strong start, Mickey quickly succumbed to the massive pressure and was sent to the minors to regain his confidence. After a few weeks in Kansas City and a tough love talk from his Pop, The Mick rejoined the Yanks and, well, the rest is history. This "Certificate of Civic Merit" was awarded to the 19 year-old phenom in appreciation for participating in the New York City Mayor's Trophy Game. This proceeds of this home run contest and Dodgers-Yankees game was donated to support youth sandlot teams throughout the city. This was Mickey Mantle's very first award as a major leaguer and it is all the more poignant as it was given for helping kids, a demographic that very soon would number in the millions and proclaim Mickey Mantle as their hero. The 13 3/4" x 15 1/2" certificate is signed by then New York mayor Vincent R. Impellitteri and features a raised gold mayoral seal. The award shows creasing and storage staining from age, however it displays well and has been professionally matted and framed to a 21 3/4" x 23 1/2" size. A small sticker from the "MICKEY MANTLE MUSEUM" is affixed to the lower right glass and a blue description label is mounted on the bottom center of the frame. Letter of Authenticity from the Mickey Mantle Museum in Cooperstown signed by Mickey's sister Barbara Mantle DeLise.
