Beloved broadcaster Monte Moore began calling Kansas City Athletics games in 1962, outlasting several years of odorous play to broadcast the Athletics three-peat of World Series titles in the early 1970’s. Moore served for two separate terms as the Athletics broadcaster, with his first stint ending after the 1976 season. Moore returned, partnering with former Athletics catcher Ray Fosse to form one of the best broadcaster pairings in baseball. Moore is credited with introducing the term “dinger” to baseball, uttering the term for the first time in 1974 after hearing of it from a conversation with A’s reliever Darold Knowles.

Offered here is Moore’s complete scorebook from the 1965 season. While the A’s were not contenders this season, finishing with a 59-103 record, a young pitcher by the name of Jim Hunter made his debut during the 1965 season. Hunter’s debut appearance, a two-inning spell in relief against the Chicago White Sox on May 13th, is included in this scorebook, as is his first career start, on June 20th against the Detroit Tigers. On September 25th, against the Boston Red Sox, the legendary Satchel Paige made an appearance for the A’s at the age of 59, starting the game and pitching the first three innings. On September 8th, fan favorite Bert Campenaris played all nine positions for the A’s. Moore included numerous hand-written notes about this event. Please note that the first page in this scorebook is detached. This is a unique treasure from the Athletics tenure in Kansas City!
