Oliver “Patsy” Tebeau was a star third baseman and fiery player-manager for the Cleveland Spiders during the 1890s, with a one-year exception for a hiatus in the breakaway Player’s League. A solid hitter, Tebeau’s batting career peaked in 1893, when the St. Louis native hit .329 with 102 RBI for the 73-55 Spiders. Tebeau managed concurrently, and although he compiled a respectable managerial record of 726-583, his tenure as skipper was marked by a contentious attitude and lack of respect for umpires and opposing players. Tebeau played 13 seasons in the Major Leagues, retiring in 1900 with 1,167 games under his belt.

Tebeau signed this cut in black fountain pen, inscribing ‘Cleveland Club” underneath his signature. This cut is affixed to an album page, upon which “Cleveland Club” and “Captain, Manager, and 3rd Base” have been inscribed in an unknown hand in black fountain pen. This item has been encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA (84043041).
