Offered in this lot is an original photograph taken during the 1930 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Uruguay in Montevideo’s Estadio Centenario. The final is notable for being contested with a different ball in each half, using the Argentine model in the first half and the Uruguayan model in the second half. Argentina led 2-1 heading into halftime, but goals from Jose Pedro Cea, Santos Iriarte, Hector Castro sealed the final scoreline at 4-2 in favor of the host nation.
This photograph shows the packed stands of the Estadio Centenario, with the Tower of Homage rising out of the tribune to oversee the match. The flag of Uruguay is flying atop the monumental structure. This photograph is matted and measures 23.6 x 16.4 centimeters. “Estadio Centenario” is printed on the matting. This spectacular photograph is a stunning artifact from the very first FIFA World Cup.
