The 1939 film, widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, “The Wizard of Oz” is the most commercially successful adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s fantasy novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”.  The film featured breakout roles from actors Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr.  Characterized by its use of Technicolor, the musical score from this film won Oscar awards for Best Original Song, “Over the Rainbow” and Best Original Score by Herbert Stothart.  Overall, the film was nominated for six Academy Awards.  The songs were recorded in the studio's scoring stage before filming.  According to the Library of Congress the film is the most seen in film history.

This original printing plate measures to the size of an LP and features the image seen on the Original Cast Soundtrack released in 1959.  The plate is made from a copper-like material and still has ink remnants embedded deep within the hand carved crevasses.  The Plate features the iconic image of Dorothy, The Tin Man, and the Scare Crow locked arm in arm.  It is likely that this is one of the original printing plates used to produce the cover for one of the greatest LP Musical Soundtracks of All time.  The album includes song such as, “Over the Rainbow” “If I only Had a Brain” ‘Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead” and ‘We’re Off to See the Wizard.”  The album in the photographs is not included but used for comparative purposes.
