“Dear Mike at one time or another, nearly every young boy has dreamed of playing in the major leagues…” So begins this letter typed on White House stationery dated May 25, 1989 and written by George H.W. Bush 41st President of the United States to slugging Philadelphia Phillies Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt. Another intimate item from Schmidt’s personal collection, the President’s letter goes on to state: “You lived that dream—lived it to the fullest, becoming in the opinion of many, baseball’s greatest third baseman and one of the game’s greatest players ever. The statistics and awards are staggering: 1595 RBIs, 548 home runs, 10 Gold Glove awards, 3 National League MVP awards, and the 1980 World Series MVP award…” The President goes on to heap another lengthy paragraph’s worth of praise on Schmidt before closing: “Now after 17 illustrious seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies you are retiring, and we are sorry to see you go. But you’ve left us so many wonderful memories Mike. Many thanks for those memories. Cooperstown awaits. With every best wish for the future, Sincerely, George Bush. Mounted letter presentation is contained in an 11” x 15” black metal frame and is equipped with hanging wire. Two-piece lot also includes a Presidential seal baseball signed by Bush in black ballpoint pen on the sweet spot with a blue facsimile signature on the opposite sweet spot and both items come with JSA LOA.
