For one week in August, 1928 the Fro-Joy Ice Cream Company of Boston gave away one baseball card with every cone. Each of the 6 different cards pictured every boy’s favorite, Babe Ruth. Kids were instructed to mail a complete set in to Fro-Joy in exchange for a large premium of The Sultan of Swat and an un-cut sheet of the six smaller cards. Because of their rarity, these attractive little black and white cards have become very popular over the years, so much so that they have been reprinted non-stop for almost 40 years. This, however, is a genuine collection of these scarce cards. The offered group includes the large blue-tinted premium of The Babe and a complete un-cut sheet of the six different Ruth cards. Those 2 pieces can occasionally be found together but this collection also includes the large (11 3/4” x 29 7/8”) rarely seen store display sign proclaiming: “Boys! Girls! - This is Fro-Joy Cone Week - A Picture of Babe Ruth Free with Every Cone”. Genuine examples of these cards are rarely offered and this lot offers the opportunity to not only own a scarce Ruth card set but also the advertisement that enticed the kids collect them over 85 years ago.
