The remarkable 1944 World Series pitted the St. Louis Cardinals against the St. Louis Browns who both played their home games at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis and marked the Browns one and only World Series appearance. Led by Hall of Fame outfielder Stan Musial and All-Star catcher Walker Cooper, the Cardinals defeated the Browns four games to two in just the third World Series to be played in each team’s home park.
This enchanting size 9.5, 18-gram, 14K yellow gold ring remains in extremely good condition and contains an approximate 45 pt. diamond set above a ruby red oval stone and each shank contains decorative engravings of the Cardinals pair of “redbirds” on a bat logo with the year “1944” below and a pair of imprints on the interior band, one reading “14K” and the other more difficult to decipher.
Although no player’s name is engraved, an accompanying LOA dated Jan. 6, 1999 addressed to the ring’s purchaser and signed by its previous owner Leonard A, Levine states: “This is a “no name” variety but through research done by the past curator of the Dizzy Dean museum, they were able to account for most of the ring and by process of deduction and the size of the ring, it was [is] a good possibility the ring belonged to Augie Bergamo [outfielder] who died in 1974.”
