Graded MINT 9 by PSA. Hall of Famer. Among nearly 3,400 copies recorded in PSA's census reporting, just three examples have been placed at a higher tier. Those beautiful – but oh-so-touchy – woodgrain borders impede any '55 Bowman baseball card's quest to achieve the coveted "9!" This Mickey Mantle commemorative, however, is beyond challenge: it has completely escaped the effects of wear (having never been exposed to any), and it retains its full, factory-fresh splendor. The piece is essentially without equal in terms of condition and quality. The distinctive, horizontally oriented design is enhanced on this piece by untouched corners, as well as a brilliant photographic image surrounded by the issue's "Color TV" motif. Mint condition.
Of course, this magnificent collectible is also distinguished by a fascinating "National Break" provenance. At the 2018 National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland, Ohio – in full view of the collecting community, a nationwide television audience and the general public – the now-famous piece was pulled directly from an unopened 1955 Bowman pack. The card hadn't seen daylight in more than sixty years, and it represents the rare collectible that couldn't possibly have been subjected to any sort of touch-ups or alteration. This unbelievably splendid Mantle card's emergence stands as the unveiling of a precious cultural artifact, and it carries an additional, unique aura as the object of a memorable, history-making event.
