The New York Giants were trying to do what no other team did in 2007/2008 – beat the undefeated New England Patriots. Even the Giants themselves were victims to the merciless onslaught of the Tom Brady-led Patriots potent offense, losing 38-35 in the last week of the regular season. The 18-0 Patriots were huge favorites entering the game, seeking to equal the 1972 Miami Dolphins, as the only teams to go undefeated. However, the Giants kept making enough plays on defense to thwart the Patriots vaunted passing attack, keeping the game close. Down 14-10 with a few minutes to go, quarterback Eli Manning led the Giants down the field, highlighted by a tremendous scramble and throw, eluding three defenders then throwing to wide receiver David Tyree who would make a miraculous one-handed catch. A few plays later, Manning threw the game winning pass to complete the upset. This victory is considered one of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history. For this gigantic victory, the team was awarded very impressive rings, designed to honor that team and the entire franchise. The crest features a bed of small diamonds with three Lombardi Trophies on top representing the franchise’s three Super Bowl victories (XXI, XXV and XLII), each with a diamond in the trophy’s football, and the Giants NY below. This is surrounded by diamonds on each side, and “WORLD CHAMPIONS” in raised relief top and bottom. One shank has the name “BARNETT” with the phrase “ELEVEN STRAIGHT ON THE ROAD” and the NFL logo and number “41” BELOW. The other shank has “NYG 17 NE 14 02.03.08 AZ” with the Super Bowl XLII logo in the middle. Inside is engraved with the “TIFFANY & CO. 555” name. This impressive 14K white gold ring weighs a staggering 70 grams, is a size 11.25 and was presented to New York Giants player Darren Barnett. This Super Bowl win by the New York Giants is one of the greatest in all the years of the Super Bowl, as they kept the Patriots from becoming only the second undefeated team in the Super Bowl era and won the game with a miraculous play on the final drive. The Championship Ring is the primary reason why athletes of all team sports compete for the title, and players who receive a Super Bowl ring cherish them more than any other possession. Opportunities to acquire a player issued ring of this monumental importance does not occur very often, and this is the first time a New York Giants player Super Bowl ring has come on the auction market. This is an extremely rare, once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire an actual player Super Bowl ring. The ring comes with the original 5” x 5” x 2.5” wooden presentation box which contains the “NY” symbol and “2007 SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS.” Also included is correspondence between the player and our consignor, who purchased the ring directly from Mr. Barnett.
