The Conference on Physical Fitness & Sport was created under the Eisenhower administration in 1956 under Executive Order and was done to promote physical fitness and exercise, encouraging state and federal agencies to educate the public on the importance of an active lifestyle. The council consists of two-chairpersons and 18 members appointed by the President and selected from authorities knowledgeable in physical fitness and sports. Nixon signed Executive Order #11562 on September 25th, 1970 and appointed the former NBA great and then-current LaSalle head basketball coach to the council on October 13th, 1970.
