One of the most iconic photographs of the legendary rapper Tupac Shakur shows the Death Row Records artist wearing a royal blue Jeff Capel Duke University basketball jersey. The young rapper is surrounded by a crowd, but is staring intently at the camera. His gold chain, glinting in the flash of the camera, rests between the screen-printed “UK” on the sleeveless basketball jersey.
The jersey included in this framed display is not the one worn by Tupac in the historic photograph, but rather his personal jersey that he frequently wore during his down time and at home. While out of the public eye, Tupac was a homebody who enjoyed writing poetry and reading books. This jersey has several small differences from the famous one, including a more rounded collar. This jersey is encased in a 32 x 40 inch framed display. A Duke logo, a picture of Tupac in the Jeff Capel jersey, stylized text that reads “Tupac”, and a letter from Tupac’s former bodyguard ring the jersey. Below the jersey reads “Tupac Shakur Personally Owned Jersey”. Two crosses that read “Exodus 18:31” are on either side of the text. This item comes with a Letter of Provenance from Tupac’s friend and former bodyguard.
