Presented here is a poem, titled “Never Let U Down”, handwritten by the late rapper and actor Tupac Shakur. The star of films such as Gang Related and Juice, Shakur’s music was noted for its artistry and wordplay, skills that are evident in this touching poem. This is a classic love poem, beginning with Shakur writing “U may wonder what liez within my heart / My intentionz have not been shown / U may contemplate my hidden motivez / My final goal is unknown”. He closes with a touching ending stanza, writing “Do not hesitate 2 trust in me / 4 [I] will alwayz be around / Whenever you’re in need find a friend in me / Cuz I’ll never let u down!”.
In the margin of this loose-leaf paper, Shakur wrote vertically “Never Let U Down / Written exclusively 4 Simi July 26, 1995” in red pen. This poem dates to Tupac’s time in Clinton Correctional Facility in New York, where he was incarcerated for the better part of 1995. “Never Let U Down” is written twice on the top of this paper in red and black ballpoint pen.
