After the release of “All Eyez On Me” in 1995, Tupac Shakur became the indisputable genius of the rap world. However, the artist grew disillusioned with his record label, Death Row, and began to chafe under the immense pressure to not only produce his own music but also write the songs for the other acts that were under contract with Death Row. This spurned a two-year period where Tupac’s output of material was simply staggering for not only the amount of work he produced but also the quality. About a year before his murder on September 13, 1996, Tupac penned the lyrics to a track intended for his friend and label mate, MC Hammer. When “Too Late Playa” was laid down in the studio, Hammer was joined by Tupac as well as Big Daddy Kane, Nutt-So and Danny Boy. Released in 1996, it was one of Hammer’s last recordings for Death Row as he left the label after the murder of his good friend. This is the hand-written lyrics for verse three of “Too Late Playa.” Written in black pen on a sheet of 8 ½” x 11” notebook paper and signed “2Pac,” the manuscript comes with an LOA from JSA (Z42423) for the handwriting and signature and notarized letter of provenance from Jermaine Carter, who obtained the sheet when the he and Tupac were both recording at the Can-Am studio in Tarzana.
