William Eckert was baseball’s fourth commissioner, assuming the mantle after his predecessor, Ford C. Frick, served for 14 years. Eckert’s time as the leader of Major League Baseball was much shorter, spanning from 1965 to 1968, but the former lieutenant general in the Air Force brought much needed innovations to the sport. Eckert was instrumental in increasing the size of baseball stadiums, as well as securing favorable leases for the teams and improving the standing of Major League Baseball abroad. Eckert has signed the sweet spot of this baseball in black pen. The panel where the stamped signature of the league president would be have been covered by green paint, and a small hole for mounting has been drilled on the center of that panel. “Congratulations Walt Alston” has been written and traced over in an unknown hand above Eckert’s signature. This baseball comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AE05259).
