Known officially as the Thurman Munson Award from the Association for the Help of Retarded Children, the award honors the memory of the late Yankees catcher who died tragically in 1979. The organization supports programs that enable people with disabilities to lead more productive lives and is considered a high honor to be a recipient of this esteemed award. Keith Hernandez was given this award in 1996. The 10 1/2" x 13" plaque features a relief of Thurman Munson in his Yankees cap and pinstripes flanked by a football player and tennis player. An engraved brass plaque below reads "KEITH HERNANDEZ 1996". The condition is good with a few surface scratches and dings. The back has a heavy wire secured for mounting on a wall. A great reminder that Keith Hernandez not only won awards on the baseball field, but off it as well. LOA from Keith Hernandez.
