Historic wire photo that documents the very first game in New York Mets history. The photo was taken in the bottom of the 5th inning in the inaugural game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Polo Grounds, empty since 1957, was the first home of the expansion Mets from 1962 until Shea Stadium was completed in 1964. The atmospheric photo shows the large crowd, Opening Day banners and famed Coogan’s Bluff looming behind the stadium’s upper deck. The back of the photo has a check list of photos from the game of which this is given number 8. An attractive photo that captures in time the return of National League baseball to New York.
