The St. Louis Cardinals began the 1960’s with an assured 86-win season, finishing in third place in the National League after a 15-win improvement from the 1959 season. Ernie Broglio led the Redbirds with 21 victories and Ken Boyer’s .304/32/97 season paced St. Louis’ high-powered offense. Stan Musial was in the twilight of his career, although he made both National League All-Star Teams in 1960, and the 24-year old Bob Gibson pitched in his second MLB campaign.

Offered in this lot is a stunning 1960 St. Louis Cardinals road flannel jersey worn by either Julio Gotay or Dick Gray and signed by Harry Walker. Gray, an infielder, played the final nine games of his MLB career for the Cardinals in 1960 before being dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates with Vinegar Bend Mizell in exchange for Julian Javier and Ed Bauta in late May. Gotay made his MLB debut in late August, playing in three games for the Cardinals and hitting .375 with a stolen base before embarking on a successful decade-long career.

This jersey is a button-down gray number, with a “3” sewn on the back in red and navy heavy felt. “Cardinals” and the team’s birds-on-a-bat logo are sewn on the chest in yellow, red, and navy chenille stitching. A Rawlings “‘Hall of Fame’ Flannel” size “42” tag is sewn on the front left tail above an embroidered red “60”. Harry Walker, who did not wear this jersey in MLB, has signed the back inside collar in blue marker. Please note that the “3” digit on the back of the jersey was changed from the original “27” after the jersey’s use. This jersey comes with a LOA from MEARS (304574) for the game use, as well as a LOA from Beckett Authentication Services for the signature.
