As is the present custom, the President signs all commissions and appointment documents and this one, dated May 12, 1962, declares Dr. Walter Johnson of Illinois, a member of the “United States Advisory Commission on International and Cultural Affairs”. Dr. Johnson was a well-known progressive political activist and Chairman of the History Department at the University of Chicago when he received his appointed from JFK. The 16” x 20” vellum document is free of any folding or creases and is signed by Kennedy in black fountain pen in lower right corner. In addition to the President’s signature, this document is countersigned by Secretary of State Dean Rusk.
