A little-known fact of American History is that only one man’s signature is found on the Declaration of Independence (1776), the Treaty of Alliance, Amity and Commerce with France (1778), the Treaty of Peace ending the war with Britain (1782) and the United States Constitution (1787) – Benjamin Franklin. Like a Colonial-era Forrest Gump, Ben Franklin was seemingly at every major event that created the United States of America. This document is modest by comparison, but no less significant in that it contains the signature of Franklin. Dated 1787, the same year he signed the Constitution, the document is a Pennsylvania Land Grant giving a parcel of land to one William Slemmons. Among his many jobs and vocations, Franklin was the Council President of the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it is in that capacity that he signed this land grant. His ornate and dignified signature is located on the left margin of the 13 x 15 ½ inch page, below an extraordinary star-shaped Pennsylvania official seal. The land grant shows moderate toning from age with some light water damage along the lower left edge. There are also four vertical and one horizontal folds from storage, but this does not in any way affect Franklin’s signature. The document has been professionally matted and framed to 34 x 41 inches along with a short biography and several images depicting the influential life of this American Founding Father. This item comes with an LOA from PSA/DNA (V05665) for the signature.
