Offered is a 4 x 6½-inch book, stamped in gold letters “National Political Map of the United States A. Ranney”. The red cloth over cardboard cover has embossed filigree on the front and back covers, as well as the books’ title on the back cover. The endpaper is a blue and red pattern on white paper.  Glued inside the back cover is a folded 30 x 37½ -inch white paper, labeled at the top in black type, “National Political Map of the United States,” above black line drawings of the following politicians, labelled from left to right:  “James Buchanan of Pennsylvania”, “John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky”, “Millard Fillmore of New York”, “Andrew J. Donelson of Tennessee”, “John C. Fremont of California”,  and “William L. Dayton of New Jersey”.

The body of the map is a line drawing of the continental United States, along with the Indian Territory and the territories of Washington, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico, and Kansas.  Just below the map is a block of black type labelled “Tabular View of the Chief Statistics of Each State in the Union, Compiled from the United States Census of 1850.” The bottom of the map is a large section of black type highlighted in pink, detailing “The Democratic Platform”, “The American Platform” and “The Republican Platform”. The whole map is bordered by black filigree with stars and stripes shields in each corner and yellow star throughout the border. The map has some wear on the folds leading to small tears along the folds in the center section.  In the center of the map is the legend, “Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1856, by A. Ranney, in the Clerk's Office of the Dist United States.”
