As a nod to his tremendous talent, the Detroit Tigers named Ty Cobb the club’s manager in 1921. For the next six seasons, Cobb led by example, tying the record for most 5-hit games in a season (4) in 1922 and then coming within a hair of winning his 13th batting crown in 1925. He retired during the 1926 season, finishing his six-year player/manager career with a heavenly .365 average.

The 40-year-old Cobb came out of retirement the following year and played 1927 and 1928 with the Athletics, putting the icing on one of the greatest careers in the history of the game. This majestic Hillerich & Bradsby bat was used by Cobb during his last eight years in Majors. The bat weights 35.5 ounces and is 35 inches in length, consistent with bats ordered by Cobb during the 1920’s. The center brand is of the 1921 to 1928 style. The bat shows heavy game use with ball marks and checking from repeated ball contact. Multiple cleat marks are found on the surface along with the remnants of where the handle was taped to enhance the grip - both highly desirable traits for a Cobb bat. A stunning bat from the game’s most feared hitters. This bat comes with a Letter of Authenticity from MEARS (314614) who have graded it an A7.
