Graded FR 1.5 by BVG. Hall of Famer, in his Rookie Card appearance. For many years, hobbyists have maneuvered their energy and resources to capture high-profile rookie cards. But, until relatively recently, few enthusiasts could accurately identify Lou Gehrig's first card, much less aspire to actually own one. Now, it's universally agreed that Gehrig's first appearance on a commercially distributed card was this one, which introduced the great player through Exhibit Supply Co.'s 1925 arcade card production. When the depiction afforded by the offered card made its debut, Gehrig was actually embarking on his third season in pinstripes, but the phenom slugger from Columbia simply wasn't represented in any of the earlier, major card issues. Indeed, the most widely distributed baseball cards of the day were provided by Exhibit through direct vending machines, and in 1925 the firm exclusively released a now-coveted "Henry L. Gehrig" entry. This exceedingly scarce arcade card displays its famous subject (in news-photo style) with a nicely detailed, black-and-white image. Corner wear, edge faults, and a couple of stray stampings on the reverse side do not impinge upon the visual drama of the blank-backed, 3-3/8" x 5-3/8" collectible. Very presentable Fair condition.
