The Hall of Fame catcher Mickey Cochrane won the first of his two American League MVP awards in 1928 while playing for the Philadelphia Athletics. Cochrane, in his age-25 season, hit for a .293 batting average, with 10 homers, 57 RBI, and 92 runs scored for the 98-win Athletics. “Black Mike” added 12 triples and 75 walks against only 25 strikeouts as he continued to build his Hall of Fame legacy. Cochrane played until 1937 with the Detroit Tigers, retiring with a sky-high .320 batting average and three World Series rings.
Offered in this lot is Cochrane’s 1928 contract with the Philadelphia Athletics. The paperwork this contract is signed on is a holdover from the 1926 season, and an Athletics emissary has crossed out “1926” and replaced it with “1928” on two places on the front of the contract. The contract is for the value of $10,000, giving Cochrane a $1,000 raise from the previous season. Cochrane has signed the contract in blue pen as “Gordon S. Cochrane”, while the contract has also been signed by John Shibe and a witness. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (BB12014).
