The U.S. Team, along with Mexico, was one of the first teams to arrive to Montevideo on July 1st, 1930. For the Americans, their World Cup participation was part of a South American Goodwill Soccer Tour which included a series of events and celebrations with FIFA, the World Cup Organizing Committee, the Uruguayan Football Association and officers of the participating nations, including plans for a proposed Pan American Soccer Confederation as well as post-World Cup friendly matches in Uruguay and Brazil.

On arrival, the American team was greeted by the Officers of the World Cup Organizing Committee and members of the U.S. Legation in Montevideo. On that evening, the U.S. team players and staff attended their official welcome by FIFA President Mr. Jules Rimet and AUF President Raul Jude, at the offices of the Uruguayan Football Association. Following the welcome speech by Mr. Ignacio Reyes Malne, William Cummings thanked the hosts on behalf of the United States Football Association and presented them with a truly magnificent USFA Presentation Trophy to FIFA and the World Cup Organizing Committee.

On May 1930, the United States Football Association called for its best players to assemble the U.S. National Team. Two months later, at the inaugural World Cup, the Americans achieved two superb wins by 3-0 against Paraguay and Belgium and reached the Semi-Finals vs. Argentina. The U.S. team placed third in 1930, and this is the highest ever outcome for a USMNT.

This was the brightest moment for the USMNT in World Cup History, and the magnificent USFA Presentation Trophy offered here is the ultimate and most valuable testimony, for the American team participation at the inaugural FIFA World Cup.
