Uruguay’s world champion inside forward Jose Pedro Cea was presented with this Jules Rimet Trophy after leading Uruguay to glory in the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930. The rampant Cea was a key part of the Uruguayan offense, scoring a hat trick in Uruguay’s definitive 6-1 defeat of Yugoslavia in the tournament semifinals. In the final match, against fierce rivals and 1928 Olympic silver medalist Argentina, Cea scored the first goal of the second half to bring Uruguay level at two goals apiece. With the pressure on Argentina, the Uruguayans Santos Iriarte and Hector Castro each banged a goal past Albiceleste goalkeeper Juan Botasso to give Uruguay a decisive 4-2 victory and the first ever World Cup title.
Cea was a fixture in Uruguay’s era of dominance, winning gold medals at both the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics and claiming numerous titles at the South American championships (today the prestigious Copa America tournament). Domestically, Cea played for Uruguayan powerhouses Club Nacional, Lito, and Bella Vista during an exemplary league career.
This offered Jules Rimet Trophy, known as “Victory” when it was presented to Cea in 1930, measures 13.5 inches tall and stands on an octagonal green stone base. A gold plaque is affixed to the base. It is etched with “1er. Campeonato Mundial de Foot-Ball”, “Pedro Cea”, and “A.U. de F. Montevideo Julio 1930”. “FIFA” is etched on the trophy as well. The upper portion of the trophy is a gold-colored depiction of the Greek goddess Nike. This trophy is in fantastic condition and is a tremendous relic from Uruguay’s World Cup. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
