Offered in this lot is a stunning and intricate trophy featuring Nike, the winged Greek goddess of victory, issued to the Uruguayan National Soccer Team after their historic victory in the 1930 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay’s capital city of Montevideo. The Uruguayans, champions of the previous two Olympic tournaments, breezed through their first two Group Stage opponents before scoring six unanswered goals in their 6-1 semifinal thumping of Yugoslavia. Matched up against 1928 Olympic runners-up and South American neighbors Argentina, the Uruguay XI came back from a 2-1 halftime deficit in the final to put the hurt on Argentina by a final score of 4-2. Jose Pedro Cea led the celeste with five goals, and the defense, anchored by the all-time great Jose Nasazzi, surrendered a mere three goals in the tournament.
This eye-catching trophy measures 2 feet tall and stands on a black stone pedestal and exhibits unique engravings throughout the trophy. The winged goddess stands atop the trophy cup playing a bugle and clutching a wreath. The handles also feature ornamented etching and are anchored to the body of the trophy by ram’s heads. Etched on the body of the trophy is “1er Campeonato Mundial de Foot-Ball / Loor A Los Campeones Del Mundo / Consejo Superior De La A. U. de F. / Montevideo - Julio 1930”. This trophy is in excellent condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
