The legendary Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro Gestido was presented with this 1930 World Cup medal by the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF). Gestido started the World Cup Final against Argentina at the left half back position, partnering in the midfield with Lorenzo Fernandez and the magnificent Jose Leandro Andrade. While La Celeste began the second half down 2-1 to Argentina, three unanswered goals from Jose Pedro Cea, Santos Iriarte, and Hector Castro gave Uruguay a cathartic 4-2 victory. Gestido had previously won the 1928 Olympic gold medal with Uruguay, and seven league championships with Peñarol during the 1920’s and 1930’s. This offered medal is silver in color, with a high relief etching of a man presenting a winged victory trophy. “FIFA” is etched on the front of the medal, while “A.U. de F / -A- / Alvaro Gestido / Campeon Mundial / 1930” is etched on the reverse side. This medal measures approximately 1 inch in diameter and is in good condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
