Uruguay’s near-mythical defensive midfielder Jose Leandro Andrade was presented with this plaque by Uruguayan president Juan Campisteguy for winning the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup. Andrade, widely regarded as the greatest player of his generation, was the first black international soccer player to appear in Olympic competition and a two-time Olympic gold medalist with La Celeste. Andrade, a carnival musician by trade, was one of Uruguay’s best players in the 1930 World Cup, earning selection to the World Cup All-Star team and winning the Bronze Ball as the third best player in the tournament. Andrade played his domestic soccer primarily with Penarol, Nacional, and Bella Vista, winning a total of three Uruguayan league titles during his legendary career.
This offered plaque is rectangular and measures 1.75 x 0.75 inches. Etched in high relief on the front is “1830 = L. Andrade / 18 de Julio / Campeon = 1930”. The reverse side features a high relief etching that reads “Presidencia de la Republica / Juan Campisteguy / 18 de Julio 1930” under the coat of arms of Uruguay. This historic plaque is in fantastic condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
