Uruguayan striker Hector Castro was presented with this 1930 World Cup medal designed to resemble the official poster of the 1930 World Cup. Castro, known as “El Manco” to La Celeste faithful, scored twice during the 1930 World Cup, notching his first strike against Peru in a 1-0 victory before scoring the final goal of Uruguay’s 4-2 win over Argentina in the tournament final. Castro’s Peru goal was the first ever scored at Estadio Centenario, the only stadium designated by FIFA as a “Historical Monument of World Football”. Castro was an extraordinarily decorated player, winning two South American championships, three Uruguayan league titles as a player, and an additional five as the manager of Club Nacional.

This offered medal is silver, with an enamel depiction of the World Cup poster on the front. This medal measures 1.25 x 0.5 inches. Etched on the back of the medal is “Hector Castro”. These medals were delivered to the Uruguayan players and coach Alberto Suppici at an event in November of 1930 on the same night the players were presented with their official FIFA World Cup winners medals. This medal is in excellent condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
