Presented is an unused score card for the 1933 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the first “Midsummer Classic” played. The 6 x 9-inch white cardstock scorecard has red printing throughout, with a red-toned reproduction of a black and white head and shoulder photograph of Babe Ruth on the front cover. On the back cover is a posed action photo of catcher Gabby Hartnett. Printed on the front cover is the legend, “Score Card American League All Stars vs. National League All Stars Century of Progress Benefit Baseball Game Comiskey Park 1933 10 c Pay No More.” The two-page centerspread has the rosters of both the American League and National League All Stars, with a tentative starting line up for both squads printed in red. The back cover bears the same legend as the front cover in a smaller font size. There is very slight browning of the paper on the front.
The game played on July 6, 1933, was held at Comiskey Park and was part of the 1933 Chicago World's Fair during the city's centennial. The AL defeated the NL, 4-2. The game was intended to be a one-time event to boost morale during the Great Depression. Ruth highlighted the game by hitting a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the third inning and catching a fly ball up against the scoreboard in right-center field in the top of the eighth inning. 20 of the game's 36 All-Stars including Ruth would later be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown.
